608 - Adult Art Therapy & Mental Health

This course explores a trauma informed approach to the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness within the context of art therapy practice. The course includes an examination of the biopsychosocial aspects of trauma, its psychopathology, cultural variables, the therapeutic relationship, and issues of ethical practice. The DSM-5 will be used as an organizing framework for reviewing mental disorders.  Students will demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of the DSM-5, critical analysis, and an understanding of its strengths and limitations, and the ability to use this interpretative framework in understanding trauma.
