Digital Art As Therapy: Embracing the New Norm

by Angela M. Poot

This case study demonstrates the value of using computers creatively for the development of self among at-risk youth. The research explores the therapeutic use of digital media for the current generation of youth who have been raised in a digital society. The individual studied was given an opportunity to develop his identity by exploring, experimenting, achieving success, and being able to criticize himself. He was also able to develop an internal locus of control by seeing the effects of his choices and finding opportunities to adapt and modify them. Qualitative research was conducted, using grounded theory and phenomenological inquiry to observe how the results emerged from the data.
