Establishing Roots: A Métis Woman’s Artistic Journey to Self-Reclamation, Self-Acceptance and Holistic Wellbeing
This autoethnographic study explores the transformative potential of art therapy in reclaiming holistic wellbeing for Indigenous individuals impacted by historical trauma and systemic barriers. Utilizing the Medicine Wheel's four directions as a framework, my capstone project examines my personal creative process, incorporating nature metaphors, symbols, poetry, and reflective writing, to re-establish connections to mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual self. By integrating Western art therapy approaches with an Indigenous research paradigm, this work challenges rudimentary mental health models and advocates for culturally responsive practices. My journey highlights artmaking's role in fostering identity reclamation, cultural connection, self-expression, and personal growth, aiming to inspire social change and improve mental health support for Indigenous communities.
