Reclaiming the Sexual Self in Group Art Therapy with Women

The purpose of this research was to discover the potential benefits of exploring female sexual expression in art therapy and to investigate how group-based feminist art therapy with women can facilitate the process of reclaiming the sexual self. The action research methodology of inquiry was utilized as a guiding framework to support this research. Data was generated from a closed, in-person art therapy group with three participants. In addition, data was collected through participant artwork and session notes from intake and closing meetings, six group art therapy sessions, and a case study presentation, and was analyzed according to the action research cycle of inquiry: plan, act, and reflect. Findings indicate that four core elements contributed to the reclamation process as well as the benefits of exploring female sexual expression in art therapy including: safety; solidarity and sisterhood; honouring shame and grief; and empowerment. These findings emphasized the value of creating safe spaces for women to explore their sexual selves and reflects how the integration of art therapy and sexuality can open new pathways for women to engage in the process of reclaiming the sexual self.
