Slime and Salt Dough: A Neurobiologically Trauma Informed Approach to Sensory Materials in Art Therapy

By Emily Hammer

This manuscript details the integration of sensory materials into a trauma informed art therapy practice. It is written with accessible language, and accessible to a wide variety of readers including art therapists and teachers. The biology of the brain and the impact of trauma on the brain are discussed, as well as how introducing sensory materials can support trauma integration. Finger painting, slime, and salt dough are then introduced, along with their set-ups, facilitation tips for professionals, the way they support the brain, and vignettes of their use with groups and individuals.
