Course Description
This experiential art therapy studio course offers an opportunity for the student to personally experience the art therapy process through exploration of art materials and art therapy techniques applicable to working with individuals and groups. The facilitator will support exploration of the artwork and the process with participants in the group. There will be opportunities through group discussion to review the art therapy process from different theoretical and therapeutic perspectives. The atmosphere will be collaborative, responsive, curious, kind, generative.

Learning Outcomes
To experience a personal art therapy process in a group context
To engage in a self-directed creative process to support personal insight and understanding
To develop skills in therapeutic presence
To observe and integrate the application of art therapy theory in practice.
To develop skills in symbolic interpretation through creating art and journal writing.
To witness and experience different approaches to doing art reviews.
KATI Training Group Facilitators use their personal, practical, training, and discipline specific experience and knowledge to role model, educate and facilitate student learning. Training Group Facilitators support the students’ learning journey by working relationally, which includes providing guidance and feedback. Training Group is a key component of the overall experience of transformational learning at KATI.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Training Group preparation and facilitation
Prepare for and facilitate Training Group using teaching methodologies that foster learning, knowledge retention, critical thinking and inquiry, and that assists students in meeting course learning outcomes.
Support the art therapy process by inviting students to move into spontaneous and self- directed art making and to lean into their creative process for personal growth and insight.
Integrate the application of art therapy theory as it is reflected in practice.
Attend to the cultural and historical contexts in relation to personal history and healing.
Support students to identify and explore significant issues and experiences in their lives.
Facilitate year end art reviews for first year students.
Host and facilitate 2nd year personal case study presentations at the end of the school year
Assessment and academic performance
Monitor student progress, concerns and challenges
Attune to situations that may impact students’ capacity to appropriately/fully participate in Training Group
Meet with students individually when needed to support their participation in the group.
Administration
Track student attendance on KATI’s learning management system
Professionalism and Collaborative Teamwork
Serve as a professional role model
Work collaboratively with faculty and the academic director to support students in their transformational learning.
Attend monthly faculty meetings
Uphold the ethics and educational standards of the Canadian Art Therapy Association, the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, and the transformational learning pedagogy of KATI
Course schedule:
Training Group is on Fridays at KATI from 10:30am-2:30pm (with a one-hour lunch break at 11:30-12:30). There are 10 sessions in the fall semester; 11 sessions in the spring semester; and three days scheduled for personal case studies in early May. The training group instructor will host approximately five presentations scheduled throughout these three days.
The candidate is required to have the following qualifications:
A graduate-level diploma or MA (Master of Arts) in art therapy
Registered Canadian Art Therapist (RCAT)
A minimum of 3-5 years clinical experience in art therapy
Demonstrated therapeutic group facilitation skills/experience
Relational approach to mentoring students and working as part of a team
Meet KATI Staff Tech Requirements and Competencies, including proficiency with Microsoft Office 365.
The ideal candidate would also have the following qualifications:
Actively working and contributing to the field of art therapy, through client work, supervision, writing and/or presentations.
Teaching experience in art therapy
Additional experience/training in therapeutic modalities that complement art therapy
Terms of employment
This position begins mid-September 2026 with some preparation and meeting time required in August and early September.
Compensation: $6000 for year-long course plus $40/hour for attendance at faculty meetings
This is a one-year contract with the possibility of extension after performance review.
